Analysis of A MUSIC Video 2

I chose this video as it is one of my favourite songs and I have always thought it was interestingly put together for a performance video. Now I will analyse each shot:

Here the motif of light is used throughout the video, the close up and focus of this shot emphasise how significant the theme and symbolism of hope that the light holds as it is contrasted against the darkness of the surrounding. In this section of the video the lights are turned on and off to the beat as if their music controls the light and hope.

This close up has a different function to show the passion of the artist. This shot also shows his genre rock: he is wearing the typical conventions of a rock star e.g. black t-shirt and his hair is unkempt and messy to show he is not mainstream and to symbolise his rebellion.

This mid-shot also is typical of the rock genre with the casual t-shirt and electric guitar, furthermore the slightly cantered angle shows confusion which is a theme of the song. Again the misenscene of the lighting shows the theme which relates to the title of the song.

This shot is effective as it shows one of the protagonists in the part narrative video successfully. Here a little girl is shown to be vulnerable, this is highlighted with the darkness closing in on her. The light shows her innocent face as she cowers in the corner with a moth-eaten shawl and bow in her hair.  Allowing the audience to be empathetic with her.

The sheer passion is also shown in this shot with the guitar player throwing himself into his music. The wires and drums also are effective here as it looks like a practice.

Again the light is shown illuminating the lead singer and his guitar therefore attracting our attention to him.

This shot of the young boy is effective since it is an extreme close up to show the audience his wounds even in the darkness.

There is parallelism here too since the boy is also shown to be cowering in the corner. His misenscene indicates he is perhaps in a different era. With the working shirt, glasses and braces this foregrounds what will happen next in the narrative

This shot then becomes a close up, the light highlighs the dust and dirt on the small boys face. The mid shot also shows the curiosity and fear in the small boy's eyes.

Next we see an extreme close up of a young girl with dust and dirt on her face similar to the young boy.

The hand dominating the shot and microphone aim to convey the power of the lead singers voice and involve fans as he reaches out in order to grab their attention.

These next 2 shots are edited quickly in time to the music at such a great speed allowing the video to become fast and exciting. They both are full length shots allowing the background and setting to be shown.

as above
Here the blur of the camera is actually effective showing the passion of the rock band being unkempt and feeling the thrill and vibes from their music. The scottish flag can easily be indentified due to the lighting showing that Twin Atlantic's Scottish roots are highly central to their music.

The close up of the lead singer and microphone show his enthusiasm to sing.

differently in this shot the lead singer's face and guitar both dominate half of the shot to symbolise the importance of voice and instrument, but also to show his enthusiasm.

Here the lighting motif again becomes dark with flashes of light (hope) whilst the band are shown to be enthusiastically playing their instruments to convey passion to the viewer.

Here the light motif dominates the shot as we see the little girl staring curiously into the light, symbol of hope.

Here the extreme close up of the lead singer is effective as we see him shouting the lyrics down the microphone to show his belief in the words.

This interesting tilt looking down upon the guitar shows there to be perhaps a superior force to their music. This is then highlighted further with the kneeling to connote that their music is so overpowering.

Again the narrative is continued as both characters make their way up a contrastingly bright corridor (compared with the rest of the video) the each are portrayed to be coming from different ends and this parallelism between the two is further demonstrated in the subsequent shots...

as above.

Here the light travels across the girl's face it continues with the boy's face as the light passes over the camera. Showing the link between the two and equally the brightness in their eyes.

as above

The rule of thirds is employed in this shot
1. girl
2. chandelier
3. boy
here the light is just about illuminating the two characters as they approach each other

next with the help of light they transform into adults... after the light has been relit
and share a romantic embrace this is done from an over the shoulder shot to show the reactions to their apparent 'transformations'

as above

as above

When we move to a close up of the two in the embrace it is surprising that the two children are back to the previous actors.

The light then fades out ending the song effectively with enigma
